How To Set Up Cleats For Clipless Pedals

Knowing how to set up your cleats will help you to get the most out of your SPD or clipless pedals. Cleat set-up is one of GCN's most requested videos... Here it is!
Subscribe to GCN on YouTube: http://gcn.eu/gcnsubs

Shimano, Look, Time, all use a standard 3-bolt pattern on their cleats. Other cleats such as Shimano SPD mountain bike pedals use a 2 bolt pattern and Speedplay use 4 bolts.

Despite these differences, the basics of where and how to mount your cleat are all the same. Oli Beckingsale and Daniel Lloyd take you through how to position your cleats for the best performance and least trouble.

As a follow up to the video, I actually decided to use the One Up EDC instead. After examining the Synchros more closely, reading comments, and doing some tests, I found that the pump is not as effective as it seems. To fill the same tire with my Crankbrothers pump takes less than HALF the strokes, and with the EDC pump, a third. Furthermore, the Synchros does not have a 6mm, which may or may not matter to some. I still think the Synchros is a good product, but the EDC is worth the extra weight and bulk to me.

How To Pack For A Bike Ride – GCN's Guide To What To Take On A Ride

We think that you need more of a contingency plan than a mobile phone when you're riding your bike. It's easy enough to be covered for most things that might happen out on the road using the three pockets on your cycling jersey and a saddlebag.

That's right. We think that saddlebags are a good thing. Keep a couple of inner tubes, a puncture repair kit and your multi tool in there. This leaves your saddlebag free for a spare layer (raincape or gilet), a mini pump, your wallet and phone.

Always take some ID with an emergency contact number with you when you're cycling. If you don't want to take your driving licence out with you, a Road ID is a good solution: http://gcn.eu/1zKvRCZ

What's In A Pro Cycling Team Mechanic's Toolbox? | Giro D'Italia 2015

We caught up with Cannondale-Garmin mechanic, Alan Butler, at the Giro d'Italia to find out the tools he uses to keep the team's bikes running smoothly.

After the riders, the pro team mechanics have one of the most important jobs at races like the Giro and the Tour. The mechanics are the guys who keep the riders on the road. Working on top-end bikes day in, day out means that they have to come up with some clever ways of fixing things and their toolboxes often contain homemade tools built up over the years as bike tech changes.

There's some gold in Alan's toolbox. You may even head to your local builders merchant to find one of the tools that he uses. Actually, you don't quite need to do that... After 10 minutes of Googling, here's the pipe deburring tool that Alan uses for cleaning carbon tubes after he cuts them: http://gcn.eu/1H9xIbo
Travelling with your bike always raises a few issues when it comes to thinking about tools and spares. How much should you take? How much is too much? Can you buy what you need out there? All valid questions, and, the last thing that anyone wants is to lose time on a trip as a result of a broken bike. We think that the list of tools and spares in this video will cover most mechanical issues that you're likely to encounter. There really is no substitute to travelling with a bike that's in near-perfect shape, though – check out the link to our full maintenance playlist below for help with that.
